My country is a cornucopia of people with talents, dreams and of excellent men and women. She is regarded as the giant of the African continent due to the greatness of her patroits and her support to many other poor African nations.
She is an oil-booming state and the 7th largest oil producer in the world. In this essay, I shall emphasize on some of the ills that keep my country on the knife edge.
I once asked an undergraduate "How do you cope with your studies when you attend lectures only once in a week?" He said to me "George, Forget those things, Money is the principal thing, at the end of the semester, I will bribe all the lecturers and get good grades." I felt so much pity for my nation when I heard this because he was an engineering student. What is the fate of technology in my country when our lecturers keep collecting or forcing students to pay money in order to get good grades. Before I left college in my first year, I experienced this, the most hardworking and intelligent students did not always get good grades while the ignorant and rich ones always got the best grades. I was a victim to this because I refused to pay some lecturers who demanded money before they could pass me. This kind of corruption occurs in every Nigerian university. I do not wish to prove the current president wrong but there's no way corruption can be tackled if it does not begin from the educational sector.
The next thing I will likely mention here is talent. Ten years ago, I had an uncle who constructed a small helicopter for me and it flew for five minutes. He also made a small speedboat, a truck and a minibus and they all moved. He didn't even attend High School, he was a primary school leaver. Today, he is in the village farming. What I'm I saying here? There are much more talented people in my country who are not known and are basically poor. The government should create an avenue to find, support, educate and elevate these people.
Sometimes we wonder why developed countries continue to grow scientifically and the developing ones like my country continue to shake, tremble and want to fall.
I was a high school student when I discovered that there are places I can get books and study them, these places are void of noises and somewhat comfortable. These places are called libraries. Imagine how old I was, I decided to use the government owned library, the Librarians prevented me from using it, they said I should purchase a year ticket to be allowed into the library. I switched to a private library and paid to use it. University and high school libraries were open to only students and my own school didn't have a library. However, some states in the country have begun making libraries free but at limited use while some states do not have libraries at all.
The government alone is not a major cause of the country's problem. Individual citizens are also held responsible as some individual citizens blame their failures on government, magical creatures or witches and wizards. My country is currently in a better situation. She just need the right people to fix things up. I love Nigeria.
