SCIENCE AND RELIGION(2)
Creation vs Evolution
Bible vs Origin of species
The argument between science and religion had not yet ended. The subject of creation was a matter to be dealt with.
And the bible declared God said "Let us make man in our own image....." The bible had explained in detail how the creation had been achieved in six days and God rested on the seventh day.
Lest the unwary faithfuls be led astray by the scientists. Archbishop James Usher spelt the matter out in mid seventeenth century. He calculated the time of creation as recorded in the book of genesis to be 4004 BC and his date was officially accepted by the christian church to the extent that it was printed on the margins of Bibles.
In November 1859, Charles Darwin published his book 'on the origin of species' which gave innumerable arguments to show that the world was not created in six days and it was not created in 4004 BC. And that man was not spontaneously created in any specifically-conceived image but had evolved through a long line of lowly animals over a period of millions of years. Hell broke loose. There was never such an uproar in the intellectual world.
Darwin set out in a long voyage round the world. Bones of animals were dug up in countries where no such animals live today. Bones of elephants in France, bones of tigers in south England, bones of whales in the middle of continents. Bones of animals were dug up like which no longer existed today. Fishes which had no jaws, giant reptiles big enough to peer over roof tops. A bird with a toothed jaw of a lizard. Horses were no bigger than a cat but possessed four hooves.
As Darwin continued, he discovered that there were vestigial organs in man and other animals which do not serve any purpose, hind limbs in whales and reduced legs in snakes etc
This revealed that some past ancestors of man had a different body form which made use of these organs.
Darwin assembled all his evidence from geology, paleontology, comparative anatomy. He came inevitably to a conclusion that all living things including man had evolved from some per-existing form called evolution.
Further proofs were required to consolidate the victory of the evolutionists. Homo Sapiens immediate predecessor was a neanderthal man unearth in Germany in 1856. He had become extinct 50,000 years ago. In 1894, Eugine Dubois discovered the bones of pithecanthropus erectus who roamed Java and Asia one million years ago and in 1959 Louis Leakey dug up from the Oduvai Gorge in Tanzania bones of Zimjanthropus, a man who lived over a million and a half years ago.
The brain case of a modern man has a capacity of a hundred and one cubic meters. The Neanderthal man had one of 1400 cc. That of Pithecanthropus was 900 and that of Zimjanthropus had one of only 500cc. It would have pleased Darwin to see how strongly his theory had been buttressed in our own times by this remarkable discoveries.
